What exactly is one serve?
The research shows that Australians aren’t being realistic about their vegetable intake. Even those of us who think we’re eating enough are falling short. And part of that is because we simply don’t know exactly how much one serve is.
The official definition available on the Plus One Serve website for Australia is 75 grams, which translates to:
- 1/2 cup cooked veg (e.g. broccoli, carrots, pumpkin)
- 1 cup raw leafy/salad veg
- 1/2 cup cooked beans/peas/lentils
- 1 medium tomato
Best tip for eating your extra serve?
Most of us are keen to eat better and improve our health. However, we’re focussing largely on the meal at dinner to achieve that goal.
A better strategy is to look at adding a serve of vegetables to our snacks during the day – some carrot or celery sticks with dip at morning tea? Or, we could look at adding a vegetable to breakfast or lunch – a tomato or cup of spinach to our omelette? A side salad with our sandwich?
One extra serve is a small and achievable goal, as long as we know exactly what 75g means. Focusing on times other than dinner to eat that extra serve is the best way to increase the benefits to your own life and our collective wellbeing across the country.
